Tiffany & Co. introduced the Streamerica collection of personal accessories and watches in 1990 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its New York headquarters.
Tiffany & Co.’s Streamerica is inspired by the aerodynamic principles of the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the Streamlined designed collection evolved from the profile of a DC-3 wing and the bolted metal sheeting of airplane construction. Streamerica is a ground-breaking collection. Never before has Tiffany featured steel as a luxury material, but no other material could convey such a powerful message of contemporary sophistication and masculinity.
The Trylon Letter opener from Tiffany & Co. Streamerica collection best encapsulates the look of an airplane wing than any other piece in this stainless steel collection.
It measures 7.75” long and 1.375” at its widest point. Retailed at $195 and later the price was raised to $200. Came inside a regular Tiffany cloth sleeve, similar to the ones their pens come in.
This piece was widely featured in magazine and printed catalogs of 1993. I remembered this item selling out at Tiffany’s and I found mine at YamRun Jeweler’s store over the phone. A page from their incredible catalog is below.
